Would you sponsor a child?
August 21, 2008
Graham and I have been sponsoring children through World Vision since around 1993 or 1994. Can’t remember when exactly. At the moment we have 3 girls we sponsor - it’s always been girls as we have daughters of our own and we really relate to their needs. One of the girls in the past could have almost passed for a daughter of our’s - she was so much like our youngest daughter to look at.
Anyway, we’re partnering with World Vision in a time of need.
Two weeks ago I was approached by World Vision Australia with a request to support their current Child Sponsorship campaign by mentioning this extremely worthy cause in my newsletter through my business but this is such a worthy cause that I’m also putting it on some of my blogs for more to see.
In light of the tough economic conditions that all Australians are facing right now, World Vision staff explained that it is becoming more challenging than ever for them to find sponsors for children in desperate need.
Children whose families are struggling to survive chronic food shortages and skyrocketing global food prices.
That is why I can’t think of a better use of this space than to ask you all to consider sponsoring a child right now.
For less than the cost of your daily café latte, you can not only change the life of a child, but of their entire community.

How good of you to lend your support to this worthwhile cause. We sponsor a child of our own, a little boy named Ubaldo, because we have no sons of our own and this makes a feel like in some way we do. It has been a very fulfilling experience and one I would highly encourage everyone to become involved in. As you point out, it’s not expensive. Just one less trip to Starbucks each day, something we take for granted, can make all the difference in the life of a child. I am reminded of a quote (and I may not be getting it exact and I certainly don’t remember who said it): It doesn’t matter how much money you had or how big your car was but that you made a difference in the life of a child.

Hi Kathie.
I’m happy to see you posting on a topic like this.
We have been thinking of doing this for sometime but have been quite skeptical because we really don’t know which organization we would like to entrust our monies to. We really want the child we sponsor to benefit fully. I’ve heard so many bad things about some of these organizations, causing me to be apprehensive about sponsoring a child. we will definitely look into World Vision. Thanks again for posting this Kathy.

It’s a shame those things are said Carlana. I do know for a fact that World Vision only uses a very small percentage of what it receives for its running costs and the rest goes to the programs for the children as intended. Something like only 18c in the dollar is used.
Tim Costello who heads World Vision has spoken at my church and is a friend of our Pastor’s. They spoke about this very thing earlier in the year so that our congregation would know that the monies we raise definitely go to the children - and it does.
My husband and I receive regular letters and cards from the children we sponsor, telling us about their schooling and their family lives. We know we are making a difference.

Kathie,
I’ve been supporting World Vision since I was a teen, and my parents before that. The first children I supported were in Viet Nam. It is a wonderful ministry, and offers a nice personal aspect, as you said, of being able to communicate with letters, pictures, and updates on how things are going in school, and more.
Praying for you, claudia
