Which path?

On one of the many forums I belong to, a lady shared with us a challenge she was experiencing.  There were two things she wanted to participate in, but there was a clash of dates. One was a fantastic opportunity and the other a desire to meet with a group of women at an event that doesn’t take place very often.

So, while she was praising God for the fantastic opportunity she was equally disappointed that the timing clashed with something else she had so been looking forward to.  She asked the group to pray for her and she was hoping for a date change.

Another came forward and shared on a book she was reading that had a character having to make a decision and feeling that God was in both – she just didn’t know how to choose.

Reading this reminded me of a magnet I had on my filing cabinet for many years, sent to me by the very first VA I connected with online in 1996.

It said something like “You choose the direction and God will direct your path”.  I’ve read that magnet many, many times over the years.

I believe this to mean we could have many paths or directions to choose from in our lives – one is not necessarily the ‘right’ one, both could be.

brickwall2I also strongly believe that if you do choose the wrong path God will steer you off it by putting up some kind of brick wall – providing you are constantly seeking Him for guidance.  However high jumps (meant for stretching and growth) should not be mistaken as brick walls. Think it’s important to mention that because sometimes it’s easy to think an immediate challenge is God saying you can’t do this when in actual fact He’s just giving you some character building exercises along the way.

Our Pastor at church has sometimes spoken of ‘choices’ and that we don’t live within the confines of a small spot to stand on.  That we have a big space to move around in where God gives us choices and He will bless any one of those choices we make inside the boundaries He sets us.

Pastor Rob has also mentioned this also relates to finding the ‘one’ to spend the rest of our lives with.  With the number of people on this earth why would there only be one person who is the right one for us?  But I digress…

choice of directionDon’t mistake not knowing which path to choose as not knowing where you are going. That’s a different thing altogether.  I believe that if you’re focussed on a goal or a dream that is God-given either path can get you there but provide a different set of experiences that you will be able to use for His Glory.

If you find yourself faced with a decision as to which path to choose, then make sure you seek God in that choice.  You may not find you get any clear direction as to which one simply because both are right but if you decide to step forward on to either one, you’ll find Him there waiting to walk with you.

House hunting

For some months now Graham and I have been hunting for a house in the country but not too far out from the city.  Many suburbs have crept into the hills and it is in one of these that we hope to make our new home – in effect our retirement home.

Our criteria is probably a little more stringent than some would have.  We want to be near bushland but don’t want to have a block that is too slopey – we are getting older and don’t want to be trying to climb steep hills to manage the land.

Graham is a ham radio operator so wants to be able to set up his antenna and aerials and be on a block that has some height.

We want to be able to have guests stay with us, like his sister and brother-in-law from South Australia and a couple of our daughters who travel back and forth between work and home, both from the country and interstate so we need guest bedrooms.

We need to be able to house Graham’s many mountain bikes, our office, gym equipment and make sure the cars are protected from the weather.

We thought we’d found the right house and had submitted offers for it, only for them to be rejected. And then on the day the tender was due to close we found another place that is more perfect for our needs. And it is this one we hope and pray will be the right home.

For me, it has been a longing for probably a couple of years or more now. Graham and I had always talked about living back in the country whenever we stayed at B&Bs over the past 15 or more years. But for Graham that longing has been more recent.  However, we used to live in the country in South Australia before we moved to Melbourne in 1991.

I’m hoping to report we have a new home to move to very soon and I long to share photos with you and stories of native birdlife and wildlife.  In the meantime, you can enjoy this bit of countryside.

Make Your Mark

I was catching up with some blog reading via my reader and noticed that Rodney Olsen had a post that touched on an event in our own family.

Lifeline has a new awareness campaign relating to suicide and in particular for that of Indigenous people.

As our own family have been touched by this awful event I felt it important to participate.

New Photography site launched

By now you will be very aware of my love for photography – that’s if you have read some of my previous posts.

I’ve been researching photographer’s sites with a plan to make some of my photos available in both digital format and in print form. After trialling a few different sites I found one that will offer payment choices in AUD and so have signed up with them.  It is in Flash and loads quite quickly and offers a gallery for you to browse through. You can create a list of favourites and then there are different options for purchase.  I hope you will go visit the site and let me know what you think of it.  Just click on the image below.

What follows Winter?

Spring of course.

I was reading those exact words in a newsletter I was preparing for a client to go out shortly.  He wrote about the economic times and how some will use the winter to prepare for spring while others will just hibernate and do nothing.

dsc_0118_edited-1His message inspired me and then I remembered what I’d seen when out in the garden earlier today.  A tree that was barren only a week ago and looking dead, now has pink blooms growing on it and small green buds forming.  I remembered thinking ‘it’s not spring yet’.

It’s still the middle of winter!  At least as far as the time of year is concerned. And yet, just in these past 2 or 3 days, although we’ve had rain and wind that has been cold, the temperature has actually been higher than it normally is this time of year.

Have the plants become confused or are they following their normal pattern?  I can’t remember what they looked like this time last year.  And yet there is this promise of spring around the corner.

dsc_0122_edited-1Many of you know the turmoil our family have been through in the past 10 months. Life for us has seemed bleak and wintery, and we have wondered if we would ever smile and enjoy life again.  But God has been good and brought many wonderful and new things into our lives.  And friends have become more dear and much closer to us.  Nothing or no-one will ever replace our beloved Miriam but life does continue even if we haven’t wanted it to.  We’ve been in a winter but now there’s the promise of spring around the corner.

Graham and I enjoyed a wonderful 4 weeks away in Canada and Alaska, away from our normal lives, away from everything that served as reminders and, for awhile, we were allowed to be ourselves again in an anonymous kind of way amongst strangers.

Our eldest daughter is expecting her first baby and we’re going to be grandparents towards the end of the year.

Another daughter has bought a home in the country near her beloved horses and we enjoyed visiting her and sharing in her happiness at her housewarming.

I’ve renewed an old passion (photography) that is becoming a consuming obsession in some ways – it’s given me something to get excited about and want to do constantly.  It’s got me out of the house.

And we’re planning some changes in our lives as well and looking towards what will be our future.

Yes, spring is on its way and while winter is still here, there’s a promise of what is to come and what might be.  We can look ahead again.

Because, as my client said in his newsletter, ‘spring will come inevitably.  It always does and it always has’.

Solomon 2:11-12  See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.

When a life touches so many

You can’t help but be spellbound.  I didn’t follow Michael Jackson’s life for the most part but I always did enjoy his music and loved watching his movements on the TV.  He was an entertainer who did entrance his audience.

His recent passing has caught the world over with the suddeness of how it happened and at such a young age too. He was around 2 years younger than I am.

I guess because we experienced our own immediate family loss not that long ago and then the son of a cousin less than two weeks ago, watching the Jackson family during the memorial service really touched my heart and emotions.  I could feel what they were feeling and I know what they will be going through for the next few months and year.  It is hard to believe how quickly and suddenly such a thing can happen.

A friend of mine from the Baby Boomer Divas has put together a wonderful slideshow about Michael’s service and I invite you to go watch and listen.

Day 19 – Heading Home!

We arrived back to Vancouver on the ship and then waited at the hotel across the road for our friends to pick us up.

We then spent our last two days in Vancouver and with Tawnya and Arnie. Headed off to the airport late Thursday Canadian time to get on the plane back to Sydney. From there we caught a domestic to Melbourne and headed home.

Been a great trip and it’s sad to see it ending but we were missing our home too and looked forward to catching up with our daughters, our friends and our cats!

Postscript: The images below have disappeared with updates of the software here but the links still work and you can click on those to view.

Day 18 – Inside Passage

Returning back along the inside passage, we headed back to Vancouver. Our trip was almost at an end. The scenery again beautiful, the food plentiful, the service amazing. Highly recommend this lifestyle!
